Lingle Rorabaugh Ballew Contacts What's New
Autobiography of a Family

Poem by J. Frank Ballew (written about 1907)
Contributed by Tamarra Ibarra

"There's a great big family of us all
 In Number even twenty,
I don't see how we lived at all But we always had a plenty.

Martha was the first girl's name
She bore no one no hate
She was everyday in life the same
And died at forty-eight.
Who bore a mother's share
She was left a home, us kids to train,
She used a mother's care.

The next a boy whose name was Marve
Of him I can not tell,
He left home young his name to carve
And now he's living well.

The next a boy whose name was Will,
Who had a spirit bold
He stayed at home the farm to till,
And shield us from the cold.

Then comes Henry, such a lad
I never saw before,
He had the patience we all had
And just as many more.

The next a boy whose name was Frank
I can't say much for him,
I think he was a slender plank,
But then his chance was slim.

Allie was the next girl's name,
Who was not afraid of work,
Nor matter when the hardships came,
She was never known to shirk.

The next was Annie, bless that girl,
She had a vim of wit,
Wher'er in this wide world,
She will always show her grit.

Then comes Hettie, next in line,
Who had a spirit sweet,
Just like our mother always had
For those she chanced to meet.

Then there's Leathy, with her twin,
Who has a heart will melt
I often thought she knew no sin
Or any evil felt.

The next was Mary, but she died
While just a little thing
And went to join the glorified
And help the angels sing.

The next a boy whose name was Haynes
Whose morals were the best,
Yet this is not so very strange
For no bad habits he possessed.

Then comes Stella, next in line,
Who has a heart of love
That reaches out to all mankind
And points them up above.

The next is Tanzy, with a will,
Though it isn't very strong
But then he helped a home to fill,
So we all have got along.

The next is Virdie, with a smile
For all about the place,
She's doing something all the while,
But wears a cheerful face.

The next is May, although she's small,
She has her place to fill
What'er she finds to do at all,
She does it with a will.

The next a boy whose name is Roy
Who has a powerful will,
He seems to be our father's joy,
The last the farm to till.

The next is Ray, a little tot,
Who has a cheerful face,
But he'd make just as big a vacant spot
As any on the place.

The next is Rosia, last of all,
A flower in full bloom,
We handle her just like a ball,
And still there's lots of room."
